REQUIRED: FREE ImPACT Baseline Testing
FC United Head Injury Initiatives & Introducing the IBJI Concussion Evaluation and Management Program
In response to recent Illinois legislative changes and US Soccer initiatives to enhance player safety and awareness regarding head injury and concussion, FC United is implementing a proactive approach to our handing of head injuries. In addition to providing education regarding concussion awareness and management, FC United is now requiring athletes ages 12 and over to complete baseline testing prior to league participation. It should be noted that US Soccer national teams are also incorporating required pre-injury baseline testing into their concussion management programs.
In order to help our athletes comply with these new guidelines, FC United has partnered with Illinois Bone & Joint Institute. The baseline consists of a computer administered test called ImPACT. The baseline test takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and addresses several cognitive areas, including visual and verbal memory, visual motor speed and reaction time. According to the IBJI team, a baseline ImPACT test is recommended, as it can provide a measurable comparison of your child's pre and post injury cognitive abilities. While ImPACT testing is not diagnostic, having an understanding of your child's baseline abilities is beneficial when a clinician is making return to activity decisions after a concussion. No portion of the test consists of x-ray imaging or any similar testing. Also, at no point will the ImPACT Test assess the level of athletic skill or ability, and results will not be used to determine your child's level of play, performance, or amount of participation. IBJI will appropriately store test results and comply with applicable legal requirements relating to protected Private Healthcare Information policies. IBJI does not deem it mandatory for an athlete to complete a baseline ImPACT test through IBJI.
