Leah Lynn Gabriela Fortune, a 17-year-old who speaks very little Portuguese and goes to school in the United States, is attracting a lot of attention as a member of Brazil’s Under-20 squad.

LOS ANGELES — The Phoenix Suns had just finished a practice earlier this season when Steve Nash, Boris Diaw, Leandro Barbosa and Grant Hill joined a man in jeans and a T-shirt who had arrived carrying a soccer ball. They formed a small circle and with their feet, thighs, chests and foreheads took turns juggling the ball. Each took more than a few touches, some to control the ball, others to show off tricks learned long ago. Then the ball was flicked to someone else in the circle. Rarely did it touch the court.

The vastly developed high school and college sports programs in the United States have been a tremendously organised pipeline of talent to the major leagues in American football, basketball, and baseball for some time now. In its first decade, MLS largely relied on the same system, with talented players often not turning professional until they had graduated from college and been selected in the SuperDraft at the age of 22 or 23 (of course, there have been exceptions such as Adu, Mapp or Altidore).

Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) announces post-Olympics timeline for national player allocation, team tryouts

SAN FRANCISCO (July 8, 2008) –Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) announced today the details of its player selection process leading into the kickoff of its inaugural season in April 2009. WPS teams will build their rosters through an allocation of U.S. Women’s National Team stars, a draft of international players, combines, additional League drafts and local team tryouts.
